Alexandra Bridge Replacement

Planning and design principles for the future replacement of the Alexandra Bridge.

Working with Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) and the National Capital Commission (NCC), Fotenn reviewed, revised and developed the planning and design principles to guide the future replacement of the emblematic Alexandra Bridge.

Linking the capital region cities of Ottawa and Gatineau, the Alexandra bridge has stood for over 100 years but is nearing the end of its lifecycle. Fotenn was retained to peer-review the studies completed to date, along with preliminary public and stakeholder feedback, and prepare a public-facing document that will support PSPC and the NCC over the length of the project timeline.

The planning and design principles in the final document reflect the purpose of the bridge as both a vital piece of infrastructure for moving people in the capital region, while also making it a space and place to be enjoyed by all Canadians.

The design of the new bridge must provide direct pedestrian connections to other important urban elements in its immediate context taking into consideration challenges due to the steep, vegetated rock escarpments of the Ottawa River shoreline.
